He helped build Poverty Flats, Tracker Marine, Swiss Chalet and many other local buildings. He also helped rebuild the church he loved, Myetta Missionary Baptist, after the fire. He was a board member of the PWSD #3. John overcame poverty as a child and became a man that always provided for his family.

John was saved and had been a faithful member at Myetta Missionary Baptist Church for over forty-eight years.

He could often be found in his spare time fishing with his grandsons. He also took great pride in keeping his yard beautiful. And as his kids would say fondly, he was the inventor of tough love.
