Fred Herndon

FRED HERNDON Fred Owen Herndon, son of Earl Herndon and Ilene Higginbotham Herndon, was born, May 5, 1933 in Independence, Missouri. He departed this life, Tuesday, May 4, 2010, in Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Missouri at the age of seventy-six years, eleven months and twenty-nine days. On April 30, 1983, he was united in marriage to Roxianna Fuller. Together they shared twenty years of marriage until her passing in 2003. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Herndon. Survivors include his children, Todd Herndon and wife Takako of Overland Park, Kansas, Douglas Herndon and wife Kim of Richland, North Carolina and Kim King and husband Lundy of Rochester, New York; nine grandchildren; a brother, Raymond Herndon of Stillwell, Kansas and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Fred was raised in Independence, Missouri and as a teen, moved to Stilwell, Kansas. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Kansas City where he began a career as a shop foreman for Southwest Freight Lines. He retired in 1984 after thirty-two years of service. He moved to the Lake of the Ozarks and worked for Wal-Mart in Osage Beach for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and gardening. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with family and friends. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle and a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will treasure the memories he created for his family and friends. Graveside funeral services and burial will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 8, 2010 in Dale Blair Memorial Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m., Friday, May 7, 2010 in Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Louisburg, Kansas. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Kansas City Hospice House and left at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Allee-Holman-Howe Funeral Home of Camdenton.
