Samuel Paul Whitcomb, of Kaiser, Missouri, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 27, 2025. He was the beloved husband of Erin (Glascock) Whitcomb and devoted father of Owen, August, and Arlo Whitcomb.
Sam was born on March 7, 1978, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, to John M. and Kathryn E. (Angel) Whitcomb and grew up in that city. Sam was known for his intelligence, quick wit, individuality, and his unique love of food and music. As a boy, he sailed the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound with his family, learning a love of the water that stayed with him throughout his life.
After graduating from Holyoke High School in 1996, Sam enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served his country as a cook aboard vessels sailing out of Norfolk, VA, and Rockland, ME. After his discharge, he enrolled at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, earning his degree in 2006. His family fondly remembers gathering for his graduation and the celebratory dinner held in his honor that December. Sam later moved to the Washington, D.C. area and applied his great talent as a chef in several fine dining restaurants, where he loved preparing dishes for his many family members and friends.
Sam soon met the love of his life, Erin. After a beautiful engagement in Santorini, Greece, they were married at Oatlands in Leesburg, VA, in 2011. Sam and Erin later settled in Missouri, where they built a life they treasured at the Lake of the Ozarks while raising their three boys.
Life at the lake was where Sam’s free spirit shined the brightest. He loved cheering on the boys at every game, match, and tournament, filling the sidelines with his humor, passion, and pride. As a family, they spent countless days and nights boating together, exploring coves, watching sunsets, and sharing the kind of simple, joyful moments that now live as cherished memories. Those times on the water, full of laughter, warmth, and togetherness, were some of the happiest chapters of Sam’s life.
In addition to his parents, wife, and sons, Sam will be dearly missed by his surviving family: brother Benjamin L. Whitcomb and wife Laura Thoms of Washington, D.C., and their daughters Chloe and Olivia; brother Daniel J. Whitcomb and wife Jennifer of Vinton, VA, and their children Emma and Levi; aunt Rosemary Wolfe of Frederick, MD; uncle George Angel and wife Barbara of Laytonsville, MD, and their sons Alex and Cory; and aunt Lindy Angel of Middletown, MD. He is also deeply mourned by Erin’s extended family, a large and loving network of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
Many have asked how they can support Erin and the boys during this time. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the boys’ 529 college savings fund would be a meaningful way to honor Sam and help support their future education. Here are other ways to help the family:
